Ellen’s Peaceful Holiday Cabin

This Cedarspan™ cottage is loved by its owners and those who pass by the property.

“We often have people stopping, coming in to look at it, asking if they can see inside the cottage.”

“They often say it looks tiny from the outside, but once you get in there, there’s so much more space when you get inside. They call it the Tardis from ‘Doctor Who.'”

But Ellen’s country lifestyle dream is far from science fiction. It was meticulously planned.

The prefab Cedarspan™ panels going up

“It took us a while to save and be able to build.”

“We were looking for an affordable option to have somewhere to stay when we visited our property.”

Ellen and her husband Mark set out to create a peaceful rural escape by adding a 30C40 to their property.

Installed to lock-up stage, ready for paint and fit-out

“We wanted our children to have somewhere safe and warm when we went down there.”

“It’s lovely. It’s very comfortable. It’s easy to keep warm or cool.”

Now that Ellen and Mark’s children are grown up, the couple has big plans for the cabin.

“This property was built for our retirement. We’re not in a position to retire just yet!”

“Things have kept us close to the city, like elderly parents and growing families.”

“I lost my mother this year, and my husband lost his father this year. So that has meant we can start to make plans for our retirement.”

Inside ‘The Tardis’: Ellen and Mark have created a rustic country cabin

Ellen loves her cabin so much; she’s contemplating an extension.

“We are thinking of putting another Cedarspan™ adjoining our current house.”

When Ellen is away from the holiday cabin, she always has peace of mind.

“It’s very well sealed. So these are important things when you’re not there all the time.”

But, when they are there, it’s always special.

“My favourite moment is every time I get down there.”

“We have wonderful views. It’s a beautiful spot. It’s lovely to have a homely cottage to go and sit on a verandah and do my knitting.”

As for Mark?

“He loves everything about it. He would go down there and be there tomorrow!”

3 Majestic Barns to Inspire Your Country Lifestyle

Living off the grid is a dream many Australians hold.

These days more and more people are making it their reality.

Cedarspan™ customers share how their classic barns shaped their country lifestyles.

It was a childhood memory that inspired Scott to build a barn.

30H40 with cedar upgrade, cedar French doors and windows, and barn-style double doors

“My father had a cedar shed when I was younger. I was looking to create something similar that suited the property.”

That’s when Scott came across Cedarspan™

“I was searching a few sites on the internet. It was convenient that we didn’t have to build from scratch.”

Making a move from Sydney, Scott and his family relocated to the Southern Highlands a few years ago.

These days, he and his wife are giving their teenage kids a taste of the simpler life focusing on family.

“I feel pleased to be able to offer that to them. It’s been a worthwhile move for us.”

Form meets function: A traditional barn and a multifunctional space

A mechanic by trade, Scott enjoys having a workshop on his rural property.

“I always love being in it, I guess. I love the ability to go somewhere and spend some time that isn’t so structured.”

Loft Barn 40H60 in board and batten with barn-style double doors

Mel has built not only a practical barn but also a beautiful space.

“We have people stopping in the street, looking at it and taking photos.”

White, traditional, and loved for its simplicity.

This Cedarspan™ barn is set on three acres of land.

It stands amongst a homestead and cottage, complementing its surroundings.

All-white inspiration, the Cedarspan™ barn complements the homestead at Belle Heath

Mel and Matt chose a custom-size Loft Barn in board and batten with barn-style double doors.

“We wanted a barn, and thankfully Cedarspan™ had the design we were after. They had the traditional style.”

“I think board and batten is making a comeback. The fact that it’s been around for a long time, it is quite on-trend.”

“The barn doors attract people. It’s a huge feature.”

And a photographer’s dream.

“Every week, I have a photoshoot.”

“Oz Design, Flower Power, Pet Barn, and Married at First Sight have filmed here.”

Away from the lights and cameras, the barn takes on practical use.

“My husband races cars. We needed something that could be multi-purpose, a larger three-car garage.”

Multi-purpose space, the barn also serves as a three-car garage

The barn has since provided Matt with a space to pursue his hobbies.

“It’s man heaven.”

“He adores that space. He loves it.”

Mel says she and her husband have embraced the rural lifestyle since fleeing the big smoke.

“The barn certainly goes a long way to give us that feeling.”

“It did start us off on a beautiful path of designing the rest of the three acres.”

30H40 with cedar upgrade. Measures 7.2m x 5.6m

This barn was Simon’s getaway for five years.

It was a place to enjoy camping, mountain biking, kayaking, and bushwalking.

To this day, Simon’s favourite memory from the cabin is the day it was installed.

The Cedarspan™ crew working through the night to complete the installation

“When the boys were putting the cabin up, I went up there. I missed them on the first day.”

“When the walls were put up, I just realised the size of it.”

“It was perhaps beyond my expectations, and it’s a solid piece of kit.”

Once installed to lock-up stage, Simon made it his own.

“I like the contrast the standout. The red door, for me it was a standout.”

“When you see it, it’s a beacon looking back through the bush.”

The classic cedar barn even endured one of Australia’s worst bushfire seasons.

3 Cabins to Inspire Your Tree Change Dream

Rural towns have become in-demand tree change destinations.

According to ABS data, migration to the regions has reached its highest record in two decades.

Looking for a change in pace often inspires the big move, and Cedarspan™ customers share how they realised their dream.

40H50 with cedar upgrade, rear enclosed verandah, front verandah, deck and elevated floor, and steel pier upgrade

Set on 224 acres, this rural oasis adjoins a national park.

Making a move from Sydney, Alistair planned a prefab project for his rural property.

He chose a 40H50 and customised the design with an enclosed verandah.

An off the grid lifestyle was ideal for Alistair, using the second bedroom as his work from home office.

The ultimate tree change: off the grid living, set on 224 acres

“I worked remotely for 20 years, so it was one of the reasons we went bush.”

“It’s lovely, no traffic, no travelling. It was nice working from there with the bush setting from the cabin’s perspective.”

Cedarspan™ 20H70 with cedar upgrade, cedar French doors, cedar windows, and verandah and deck

In the quest for a slower pace of life, this classic 20C70 cabin inspires a country lifestyle dream.

The cedar cladding upgrade, cedar windows, and doors give the cabin a classic look.

Step inside, and the Cedarspan™ high-pitched ceiling creates a spacious and inviting atmosphere.

After settling into country life away from the hustle and bustle, Maren says there’s no turning back.

“My daughter is in Sydney. Do I miss it? Do I want to live there? Probably not!”

Here on this rural property, a red door joins two Cedarspan™ cabins.

Nordic inspiration sets the scene where classic charm meets minimalism.

Nordic inspiration: Two Cedarspan™ cabins joined by an annex

It was 1996 when the first cabin was built, inspiring its new owners to replicate it.

“We moved here nine years ago, and it was always here.”

“We thought it’s easy to add on another section. So we wanted to copy that and add it on here,” Maren explained.

Step inside, and it’s all about the view.

The bay window isn’t the only feature that gives the room a wow factor.

What a view! The bay window was added by Maren

By painting the Cedarspan™ trusses black, the high-pitched ceiling is even more striking.

Six years on, Maren shares fond memories of having the new Cedarspan™ installed.

“It was very easy. We ordered it, they gave us a date, and they built it in the time frame.”

David’s Rustic Cabin, a Family Holiday Home

A trip to the Cedarspan™ display centre led David on a path to a tree change lifestyle.

“We were looking around at what was available, and we went out to Girraween. I said to Doug, ‘how much is this one?’”

As it turned out, it was for sale.

“We bought your ex-display cabin.”

30C70 with cedar upgrade, elevated floor, and additional verandah and deck

Since then, it’s been a holiday home and a place for his children to experience a simpler life.

“We’ve got two money drainers. They’re both young adults now.”

“They all learned how to drive out there.”

The Cedarspan™ verandah and deck is the perfect spot to enjoy nature

Set on 110 acres, it’s far from city life.

“We escape out to the bush on weekends.”

David recounts how he and his wife built their country lifestyle.

“It was already erected. The guys at Cedarspan™ pulled it all down, and Elke and I rebuilt it on our property.”

“Doug supplied all the plans, and there was always the backup there by phone. So it was all pretty straightforward.”

The Cedarspan™ prefab panels arrive, ready for assembly

It was the ease of construction that appealed most to David.

“There’s good engineering behind it.”

“You can pick up a panel and bolt it together in the modular style, and away you go.”

Rustic charm: A partially complete internal fit-out

In completing the internal fit-out, David says he’s in no rush.

“We don’t make it a chore. We do a little bit each time. Finally, we’re up to finishing the ceiling one day.”

And his advice for anyone considering a tree change?

“If you can handle being out in nature and not having a coffee shop around the corner. Do it! Personally, I enjoy the bush.”

Nick’s Peaceful Cabin, a Tree Change Dream

In a small town in the mid-north region of South Australia, Nick has built a home and a lifestyle.

“It’s 120km from Adelaide, but it’s way off the beaten track.”

“I always wanted to build a home. My father was a builder, and my brother had built his own home. So I thought it was time that I had done the same.”

Off the grid! Nick has built a cabin as well as a lifestyle

As a retired pilot, Nick had no prior building experience.

“The idea of a kit was appealing because the kit comes with everything.”

He chose a 40C50 with cedar upgrade, an elevated floor, and two verandahs and decks.

“I lived in it for about seven years by myself, and now I have a partner, and she comes with a dog and a cat.”

Inside the Cedarspan™: Fit-out completed by Nick

These days, Nick and Judy are living off the grid.

“There’s no power. There’s no water, so we had to build a power plant and a rainwater tank.”

“I listen to everyone else complaining about their bills.”

Nick says he hasn’t paid a water or electricity bill in the last ten years!

“Apart from that, it’s insurance and council rates and with every house – maintenance.”

“I’m a bit smug about it at times.”

Weathering the elements: The Cedarspan™ has withstood harsh conditions

The prefab cabin has also stood firm against harsh weather conditions.

“Very hot summers, very cold winters. There’s plenty of wind, too.”

“It wasn’t long after I put it up that we had some of the worst storms in the area.”

“We’ve had gusts with over 100km per hour. So there’s no problem.”

Shortly after painting! Building the prefab Cedarspan™ was a DIY project

When it came to designing the cabin, Nick recalls it as straightforward.

“It was easy. It was a pretty hands-off process.”

“I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend it to anyone.”

Building the prefab cabin was one of Nick’s most enjoyable projects

Assembling the prefab cabin was a DIY project with help from friends.

“I don’t want to oversimplify it because it is a physical job, but you don’t have to know everything before starting.”

“There’s an instruction manual, of course.”

And Nick can’t wait to build another Cedarspan™

“It’s a very enjoyable process.”

“If anyone in the area is building one, I’ll come over and help build it. It’s fantastic!”

This holiday home in Kalamunda, Western Australia was built in just 5 days

Buying rural property and escaping the city smog is a dream many Australians have. The rolling hills, fresh air and warm sunshine make the perfect setting for a holiday home.

But there’s one hurdle – building a home on rural properties isn’t easy, and can take months on end.

One Aussie builder overcame this problem by using a prefabricated kit from Cedarspan. He assembled this classic holiday home in just 5 days on a property in Kalamunda, Western Australia.

cedarspan cabin constructed in just 5 days | the pefect holiday home or airbnb for rural property

The perfect setting for a rural weekend escape, airbnb or holiday home.

The large verandah creates the perfect spot to sit and watch the sun rise (or set) with a warm cuppa in hand.

Prefabricated in a few weeks, assembled in 5 days.

The cabin was prefabricated in-factory into sections, so once it was delivered to the property, the builder just had to follow the included instructions to put the pre-made pieces together. This took just 5 days, and he’d never done a project like this bef0re.

Cedarspan Cabins are made-to-order, so you can select the size, finishes, options and layout, and really make it your own!

The cabin is the Cedarspan 30H50 Loft Cabin. It measures 5.6 x 9m, providing enough space for 1-2 bedrooms, a kitchenette, bathroom and living area inside. Also shown are the extended verandah, premium Western Red Cedar cladding and handcrafted cedar windows.

No concrete slab or site levelling required

Another time-saving factor is the raised timber floor system. This means that a concrete slab is not required, saving time and money onsite. It also means no site levelling was required, so the cabin could be installed directly on the sloped property.

Want to see inside a Cabin?

We’ve got a few buildings on display at our factory in Girraween, NSW (about a 40 minute drive from the Sydney CBD). It’s amazing to be able to experience them in person. To feel the wood grain, try out the windows and swing open the doors. To step inside and be able to picture what you will create in your airbnb or holiday home cabin.

Appointments essential. Call 1300635966 to book your appointment now.

If you can’t come and visit the displays in person, next best option is to stalk our Instagram (go for it, you’re welcome!), where we share photos, tips and the occasional walkthrough video.
