Rick’s Cedar Cabin, a Family’s Special Place

Rick was once an empty-nester, but circumstances have changed.

“The problem with older girls is they tend to go away and come back.”

“I have wound up having a full house again.”

It was 2006 when Rick had his Cedarspan™ installed.

“At the time, we had a full house and nowhere for guests to stay, so we wanted to build a cabin.”

The prefab Cedarspancabin was built 15 years ago

He chose a 20C50 with cedar upgrade and an additional verandah and deck.

“Shortly after it was finished, my kids moved out and then we had a big house full of empty rooms.”

But soon, his children were back. It seems the cabin is the place where his children love to return.

“Now, my eldest daughter lives in the cabin by herself.”

Rick’s daughter has created a comfortable home

It’s been 15 years since Rick set out to add a prefab structure to his property.

He recalls working with the Cedarspan™ team.

“They were very accommodating.”

“It was easy for us. We knew what we wanted.”

Reflecting on how the cabin has improved the property, Rick says it was a wise investment.

“It was very good value for money.”

“We certainly couldn’t have built anything better for what we needed.”

“My daughter, who is living in it, wants to build one when she finally moves out.”

Linda’s Stylish Cabin, a Place for Happy Family Memories

A visit to the Cedarspan™ display centre inspired Linda to add a prefab cabin to her property.

“I liked the look of them and how they fit together as a kit.”

That was 25 years ago.

“It’s been wonderful.”

“It’s sturdy. It hasn’t moved. It hasn’t leaked.”

Cedarspan™ 20C30 with cedar upgrade and double-hung windows

Linda and her husband chose a 20C30 with a cedar upgrade.

By adding an annex, the couple has divided the space, creating two zones.

“The back part serves as my husband’s tool shed, and the front part has served as an extra family room for many years.”

Over the years, the cabin’s use has evolved.

Back when Linda’s sons were teenagers, it served a whole other purpose.

“It was a music practice room for two sons who are now professional musicians.”

Linda added an annex (left) creating two zones within the cabin

Linda and her husband even used the space to host a marching band.

“Because it’s insulated, it turned out to be a perfect music room for a couple of trombone players.”

Nowadays, it’s Linda’s dedicated creative space.

“I’m using it for my upholstery studio. I do lots of different crafts.”

Linda uses the cabin as an upholstery studio

When it came to assembling the structure, it was a DIY project.

“My husband and a kid from down the street who was doing his carpentry apprentice put it together. It went together easily.”

Form & Function: the multipurpose cabin is a striking feature

For the outside, Linda and her husband chose a striking colour scheme.

“We decided to spruce it up, so we put some black paint on it. It looks really smart, and we went with a red door just because.”

“I love the look of the English cabins. We travelled a bit, and that certainly was an inspiration.”

And what’s Linda’s advice for anyone considering a Cedarspan™?

“I wouldn’t hesitate. It’s great quality, very flexible. You are getting full use of the space.”

Nick’s Peaceful Cabin, a Tree Change Dream

In a small town in the mid-north region of South Australia, Nick has built a home and a lifestyle.

“It’s 120km from Adelaide, but it’s way off the beaten track.”

“I always wanted to build a home. My father was a builder, and my brother had built his own home. So I thought it was time that I had done the same.”

Off the grid! Nick has built a cabin as well as a lifestyle

As a retired pilot, Nick had no prior building experience.

“The idea of a kit was appealing because the kit comes with everything.”

He chose a 40C50 with cedar upgrade, an elevated floor, and two verandahs and decks.

“I lived in it for about seven years by myself, and now I have a partner, and she comes with a dog and a cat.”

Inside the Cedarspan™: Fit-out completed by Nick

These days, Nick and Judy are living off the grid.

“There’s no power. There’s no water, so we had to build a power plant and a rainwater tank.”

“I listen to everyone else complaining about their bills.”

Nick says he hasn’t paid a water or electricity bill in the last ten years!

“Apart from that, it’s insurance and council rates and with every house – maintenance.”

“I’m a bit smug about it at times.”

Weathering the elements: The Cedarspan™ has withstood harsh conditions

The prefab cabin has also stood firm against harsh weather conditions.

“Very hot summers, very cold winters. There’s plenty of wind, too.”

“It wasn’t long after I put it up that we had some of the worst storms in the area.”

“We’ve had gusts with over 100km per hour. So there’s no problem.”

Shortly after painting! Building the prefab Cedarspan™ was a DIY project

When it came to designing the cabin, Nick recalls it as straightforward.

“It was easy. It was a pretty hands-off process.”

“I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend it to anyone.”

Building the prefab cabin was one of Nick’s most enjoyable projects

Assembling the prefab cabin was a DIY project with help from friends.

“I don’t want to oversimplify it because it is a physical job, but you don’t have to know everything before starting.”

“There’s an instruction manual, of course.”

And Nick can’t wait to build another Cedarspan™

“It’s a very enjoyable process.”

“If anyone in the area is building one, I’ll come over and help build it. It’s fantastic!”

Two Rustic Cabins Make a Country Lifestyle Dream

It’s a tale of two Cedarspan™ cabins.

One old.

One new.

The original has been standing for 25 years.

When Max moved onto the property, he decided to add another.

“Once we determined we wanted to keep it the same, we contacted Cedarspan

A 30C50 was added beside the existing cabin, and an annex joins the two.

A Cedarspan™ 30C50 joins the original cabin

“There were a few different designs we went through. Doug helped us out with that process.”

“Cedarspanwas quite accommodating when we needed to change things.”

On the inside, the theme is rustic charm.

“It fits into our country style living. It fits with living in a rural setting.”

The Cedarspanexposed beams add warmth and texture to the room

The Cedarspan™ high-pitched ceiling and steel trusses create a distinct look

Anyone who visits the property agrees.

“They think it’s gorgeous. They think the spot itself is gorgeous. They love the timber.”

Side by side: The 30C50 (left) and the original cabin a 30C30 (right)

A decade on from adding the second cabin, Max is glad he did.

“It’s improved the value of our property significantly.”

“For what we wanted and the price we paid, it was well within budget.”

A Country Cabin, a Place for Family Memories

“It’s so functional. It’s fantastic.”

“We can’t imagine not having it.”

It’s here where Glynis and her family enjoy a separate and practical space on their property.

“We use it all the time.”

She chose a Cedarspan™ 40H60 with Wethertex cladding and two verandahs.

By adding barn doors, she’s given it a distinct look.

“We wanted ours to look like a rural barn. We wanted it to compliment the house that we built.”

Cedarspan™ 40H60 in Wethertex cladding with additional verandahs and barn-style double doors

So what does Glynis love most?

“The loftiness of it. We went for extra height. We went for higher walls, and you’ve got such a fantastic sense of airiness and space.”

“It makes it seem so much bigger because of the height.”

The Cedarspan™ high pitched ceilings create a welcoming atmosphere

Glynis says the cabin has exceeded expectations.

“I can’t put a figure on it, but it has been far more useful than we could have ever imagined.”

“In terms of its use, it’s invaluable.”

Assembling the prefab structure was a team effort.

“The barn was incredibly easy to put up.”

“We don’t know what we’re doing, but my son does know what he’s doing, and he has two friends who are both carpenters.”

“So four of them with us as labour put the whole thing up to a weather tight stage in one weekend.”

The cabin also finds practical use.

“The verandahs are so beautiful. On and off, we store so much stuff under the verandahs because they’re so weatherproof.”

The Cedarspan™ prefab design provided ease of construction, making it a DIY project

Most of all, the Cedarspan™ is a focal point for family memories.

“We had a Christmas in it once, and we had 16 sitting in it for dinner. It was great.”

And it’s convenient when the adults need a break, too.

“We dump all the kids in there. All the teenagers all go over there, and we have some peace and quiet over here!”

A Charming Cabin, a Couple’s Solution to Different Needs

It was 2009 when Wayne and Carol added a Cedarspan™ to their property.

“I would have been happy with one of those prefab steel sheds. But I thought we’d get something that’s nice.”

“My wife doesn’t like ugly,” Wayne said.

And so, here stands a robust, functional and aesthetically pleasing structure.

Cedarspan™ 20H40 with cedar upgrade, additional windows, and skylights

Two years ago, a storm caused a large tree to fall on their cabin.

“It was cosmetic damage to one end of the roof and the side.”

After the storm: A fallen tree caused minimal damage to the cabin

“That little bit of damage to the shed allowed us to get an insurance claim to have another tree removed from the property.”

“The council was resistant to cutting it down even though it looked like it was going to blow down.”

“In the end, it got cut down because it had fungus in the roots.”

Flexible design: Wayne and Carol chose the size and orientation of windows and doors

Wayne recalls the flexibility in designing the cabin with the Cedarspan™ team.

“It was an evolving process. I kept sending my ideas to Doug, and he kept updating the plans.”

“I was amazed at the speed at which it went up,” Carol added.

Split in two – the bottom level of the Cedarspan™ allows Wayne to store his belongings. While the loft is Carol’s domain.

The Cedarspan™ loft area: Carol’s creative domain

“I love it. I’m a bit of an introvert, and I need alone time. So it’s a bit of a haven there.”

“She sews and paints up there, listens to her music and does yoga.”

“She puts on her music, and she goes into another space,” Wayne added.

The couple’s different lifestyles allow them both to enjoy the space.

Here’s what lock-up stage looks like with the visible foil sarking

“Wayne has a lot of stuff, and I needed some space of my own.”

“I get up there, and he’s not even allowed up. So he put that ban on himself.”

“Carol is a minimalist, and I’m into detail. We’re opposites. She wants to throw out all my stuff!”

An easy and economical way to add space and value to your property

As a Former Tax Auditor, Wayne is pleased with his investment.

“If it’s attractive, it has to improve the value of the property. If anyone bought this property as it is, I’m sure they would knock the house down and leave the shed.”

Scott’s Man Cave and Sheep Shearing Shed with a View

“I wanted it to blend into the hillside.”

“I’m very happy with the way it looks and sits in this environment.”

What a view! The Cedarspan™ cottage (right) creates a contrast with the main dwelling

Set on 13 acres with North Bruny Island as the backdrop, what’s not to love?

Before moving here, Scott lived on a commercially operated farm.

“I needed a shearing shed barn combination.”

“I tried in Tasmania, and nothing came up. That’s when I checked out your website, which looked like it had the aesthetics I was requiring.”

The prefab Cedarspan™ panels made their way from New South Wales to Tasmania.

Road Trip: The Cedarspanpanels transported from NSW to Tasmania

“I wanted to make sure it was an authentic barn rather than building one of those iron sheds.”

“I was very impressed with cedar as a timber.”

The Cedarspan™ creates a contrast to the rest of the property. It also gives Scott a comfortable home away from home.

On the inside, he added a partition wall to separate the living space from the shearing shed, making it a multipurpose area.

“It’s given me what I wanted, and efficient small space to have as a house, but it’s a cottage.”

“I’ve moved out of the Airbnb which was my home. I can now have 14 people staying in my B&B.”

Cedarspan 30H60 with cedar upgrade and additional verandah

He calls it ‘The Caretaker’s Cottage’.

“It’s morphed from being a shearing shed and storage area to now having a functioning kitchen and bathroom.”

“I reconstructed the doors, so I’ve got a catching pen outside. I bring them through some swinging doors. We have a letting out pen as well.”

Scott has further changed the design by modifying the original verandah. He also added an awning, sliding doors, and a tennis-hit-up board.

And the highlight so far?

“Having my friends up here for the first time to entertain them in my cabin.”

“I have grandkids, so they all use it for their little play hut.”

Joe’s Charming Country Cabin, Built to Last

“We built a house, and then with plenty of space, we decided to go for a cabin.”

Set on 10 acres of land, this Cedarspan™ creates a picture-perfect scene.

“It was excellent value for money because it was affordable in the first place.”

It was 2005 when Joe added the prefab cabin to his property.

Cedarspan™ 20C30 with cedar upgrade, and additional verandah and deck

“The structure is the sort of thing that would last for ages. We did sell it after 12 years, and at that stage, it looked good as new.”

He recalls the design process, choosing the size and orientation of windows and doors.

“We came up and visited Cedarspan™, and I was impressed with the flexibility.”

“I was very impressed that you could choose a panel and the size of window you wanted in it.”

Sixteen years on, Joe remembers delivery day well.

“It was daunting at the beginning, but as we got into it, we realised that all you had to do was a bit like following a recipe.”

“Each panel was easily managed by one or two people, which was an important factor because I was hoping to do it without needing builders.”

One by one the prefab Cedarspanpanels go up

The ease of construction made it a DIY project

Joe enlisted the help of his family.

“My children, son-in-law, grandkids, and wife were all part of the building process.”

“All the panels were pre-drilled, so all we had to do was put the bolts through them and tighten them up. It was quite incredible how all the panels would line up.”

Joe painted his Cedarspan™ prefab cabin grey to blend in with the landscape

The country cabin also created a special place for the grandkids to enjoy a simpler life.

“They loved coming up to our few acres there. It was a real opportunity for them to get into the bush and have plenty of room to play.”

The cabin provides a quiet place to retreat from the main house

Joe says the cabin was also a highlight for prospective buyers.

“It certainly added more than the cost of it to the value of the property.”

“When we sold it, people were more excited about the cabin than the house!”

Barbara and Ian’s Cedar Cabin, a Peaceful Backyard Retreat

“It was attractive, and because we were able to make it match the house, it didn’t detract from the garden.”

A prefab Cedarspanwas ideal for making Barbara and Ian’s cabin look like a natural extension of their home.

“It appealed to us because it was cedar and matched the house.”

They chose a 20C40 with cedar upgrade, cedar doors, and cedar windows.

Cedarspan™  20C40 with cedar upgrade, cedar doors, and cedar windows

“We were looking for something to house his workshop,” Barbara explained.

“Prior to that, any work that had been done on the verandah and if it looked like rain, everything had to be packed up.”

“We also needed somewhere to store our bikes and the woodfire.”

“The bikes and the wood did not get accommodated in the Cedarspan™  because it was far too good!”

Barbara recalls the easy process of designing their Cedarspan™ cabin.

“We have absolutely no complaints.”

“One of the  attractive things was you dealt with the paperwork.”

The cabin also set the backdrop for their thriving garden.

“We utilised the front of it for growing passion fruit, and because of the sun, we had wonderful crops there.”

Prefab Cedarspan™ cabin assembled in panels, providing ease of construction

The customisable design also provided the couple with privacy.

Barbara and Ian chose the size and orientation of the windows and doors.

“We had no windows in the back of the building because that was against the side fence and our neighbour’s yard.”

Visitors and locals also admired the prefab structure.

“Because it had a workbench, a lounge chair, a refrigerator, a bed, a toilet, we called it the palace.”

“There was an old man who lived over the road, and he was a real Aussie, and he said, ‘I’m moving in!'”

Inside this Cedar Barn, Bruce is King of his Domain

A man cave.

And a quiet place to retreat.

This is Bruce’s sanctuary.

“That’s my little play area.”

It was 2015 when Bruce set out to add a prefab structure to his property.

“We did a bit of research, and we found the Cedarspan™ buildings, and we liked the look of the barns.”

“It’s already added value to the property.”

“I rate it highly.”

Cedarspan™ 30C40 with cedar upgrade, cedar windows and cedar doors, and additional verandah

The cedar barn is a striking feature of the farm.

“Our house is on the top of the hill, so the barn is as you drive in on the property.”

“They love the cedar look. Everyone comments on it when they get here.”

Bruce says the prefab barn has changed how he and his family use their property.

“Before the barn, we had a carport next to the house, and I used to put the mower there and put a tarp over it.”

“Now that I’ve built the barn, I’ve been able to free up so much space.”

Bruce later added his own additional verandah

It’s also home to some of his favourite things.

“It’s functional for what we need. I’ve got all my surfboards and farm equipment.”

But it’s off-limits to the rest of the family!

“We made sure we told the children that the barn is not a place to put all their junk.”

The ultimate man cave: Bruce uses the barn to store his farm equipment and surfing gear

The barn also doubles up as a multi-purpose space.

“The selling point for us was also the loft. I’ve put my office up there so I can record all the details of what I’m doing around the farm.”

“I’ve put the internet in there for my office.”

While designing his Cedarspan Bruce was initially considering a smaller structure.

“We did a bit of planning around what we wanted to put in there.”

“We then chose the larger one, which is the perfect size for my farm machinery and farm equipment.”

Six years on, Bruce fondly recalls building the prefab barn with his son.

“He and I built it together. It was a fun exercise for both of us.”

“He picked up a lot of building and plumbing experience while he was an electrician. So I was learning from him, but I didn’t want to tell him that!”
