How to Create (& Run) a Great Cellar Door

For a lot of Australian wineries, whether established or just starting out, creating a cellar door to welcome the public to your property is becoming essential.

While setting up a cellar door may seem a daunting task, done right, it has the potential to boost revenue & brand recognition in a big way.

Here are a few tips for creating a great Cellar Door, from the ground up.

1. The Entry (how to create a good First Impression)

If your winery is on acreage, you need to have a noticeable entry to get attention. If the entrance to your property just looks like a farm, or a private property, people will be hesitant to go in.

There a few ways to make your property entrance stand out to passers by.

Firstly, distinctive signage.

It’s a good idea to have your brand/logo visible, along with what you offer.

Signs describing your property should be to the point & clear – remember they’ll be read by people who are passing at approx 60km/h!

A quality gate is another essential part of your property entrance. This creates a first impression of your property for guests

If you don’t have a gate, or currently have a wire farm gate at the entrance to your property, it’s time to fix that. Take a look at countrystyletimberfarmgates.

Create a cozy, welcoming building to host your Cellar Door

There are a few options for creating the building for your cellar door.

  1. Brick and mortar or traditional building – this is a long process, can depend on getting a builder who will come to your property, and has availability in their schedule (they’re all flat out at the moment!).

  2. Tin sheds – while a tin shed might seem a cheap option – it’s exactly that. Unfortunately, this means they’re very hot and uncomfortable under the Aussie summer sun! Remember, the summer months are when Aussies venture out to explore wineries and visit your cellar door. Keep in mind that you’ll need a lot of aircon and insulation to turn a tin shed into a successful cellar door.

  3. A Timber Loft Barn – handcrafted and stylish, but faster than traditional building. Cedarspan loft barns are created in our factory in Sydney, so putting it together on your property can be done in under a week. Another bonus? Being timber, our barns are made just like a timber-framed home – so you can add insulation, wall linings and services. Elevated lofts are also available, which make a great storage area for your cellar door, and maximise your floorspace.

Make it photo-worthy!

You’ll want to make sure that there are a few areas on your property that make a great backdrop for photos.

Ideally, have your brand shown here too, so when visitors take photos and share them online, your brand is getting recognition as well.

Even just a side of your building with the company name above makes a great backdrop for photos.

A beautiful example of this is Keith Tulloch’s Hunter Valley winery (pictured below).

Make the most of the view

If you’ve got a view, promote it! Be sure to include lots of glass, or doors that you can open up on a sunny day.

This will allow people to sit looking out at the view as they taste your wine.

Vinden Wines have done this with their beautiful cellar door. Glass doors (open or closed) allow guests to enjoy the view, and seats are positioned to look out at the vines.

Offer a Mix of Seating Options

Great cellar doors also have a mix of seating options to cater for guests.

The most popular ones we see are:

  • stools at a bar, which is perfect for groups of 2 0r 3, and quick tastings.

  • a large table with chairs – perfect for larger groups, hens parties and wine tour groups

  • sofas around a coffee table – this is great for a relaxed option, and typically will mean guests stay longer

By having a mix of seating options, you’ll be able to cater to a wide range of guests and events. Couples, hens Parties, wine tours, or even whole weddings!

Lastly, friendly service and the right playlist will help set a relaxed atmosphere for your guests.

Loft Barns: Your Questions answered

Chatting to a client from Mudgee recently about his plans for a Loft Barn, we realised there’s a few really helpful things you should know before you purchase or build a loft barn, and a few key questions you’d probably love the answers to.

So here’s the answers to all of the important questions about Loft Barns.

What is a Loft Barn?

A Loft Barn is a traditional, high-walled building with an A-Frame roof, and an internal ‘loft’ that creates a second level.

Often featuring traditional barn doors and wooden cladding, they can be painted or stained and add classic charm to any property.

Do you need a concrete slab?

The answer to this is really up to you! If you’re going to be using the Barn as a Garage (hey, nice garage!), then you’ll want to arrange a concrete slab, which we can install your barn onto.

If you’re not using it as a garage, or you want to be able to transport the barn easily in the future, you can purchase a raised timber floor system with your Cedarspan Barn. This system uses piers to elevate the barn off the ground, and creates a timber floor inside that you can stain or add floor coverings (tiles, carpet, floorboards) on top.

(And if youre thinking…. termites?? Don;t worry, it’s all treated, and complies with Australian Building Standards, so you’re safe).

What sizes are they available in?

Cedarspan Loft Barns come in a range of sizes, from approximately 20m2 up to 80m2. Larger barns and other customisations are available upon request.

You can download our pricelist here, which contains all of our available sizes.

How much does a Loft Barn cost?

The answer to this depends on size and options, so we recommend downloading our pricelist which contains prices + dimensions.

Compared to a ‘traditional build’, a prefab barn has cost-saving and time-saving benefits. Not only is it a set price, the whole installation is done in a week, meaning you get to use your new barn quicker!!

I have a builder who can assemble my barn for me, can I purchase a kit?

You sure can!

We’ll pre-make your Barn in sections in our factory, and then send it (with instructions and video tutorials), ready for your builder to assemble onsite for you.

Most installations are completed in under a week.

I want to be able to drive right into my barn… can I get automated doors?

We’ve got just the solution for that! Simply purchase your barn with some of our handcrafted barn doors, and then attach Gate Automation to the doors. With a press of a button, your barn doors will swing open and you can drive into your new barn/garage/buildingthatmakesneighboursjealous.  It’ll work like a treat! #thankuslater!

Do I need council approval for a barn?

Ok, reeeally good news on this point!

In NSW, if your property is Rural-Zoned, you can add a barn up to 200m2 in size without council approval!

Here’s some more detail on that.

Outside of NSW, or non-rural properties, we recommend checking with your local council to get their advice.

How big is the loft?

Good question! When you’re standing in the loft, there’s 2.4m to the highest point, and it tapers down to 60cm on the sides. (Yep, it feels roomy. And a bit whimsical. And very instagrammable. ;) )

Want to see inside a Barn?

We’ve got quite a few barns on display at our factory in Girraween, NSW (about a 40 minute drive from the Sydney CBD). It’s amazing to be able to experience them in person. To feel the wood grain, undo the latch and swing open the door. To step inside and be able to picture what you will create in your barn.

If you can’t come and visit the displays in person, next best option is to stalk our Instagram (go for it, you’re welcome!), where we share photos, tips and the occassional walkthrough video.

We hope this post has answered some of the Loft Barn questions you’ve had!
