Exploring NSW: Brooklyn

Sydneysiders, the ultimate weekend escape awaits you!

Brooklyn, just a short drive from Sydney, is a cozy waterside town that will make you feel a million miles from the city. 😍

Enjoy a relaxing cruise of the Hawkesbury via @theriverboatpostman, grab a fresh bite to eat at Life Boat Seafoods, and then stay the night in a cozy Airbnb on Dangar Island. 🌲👌😉

Scroll down for our full list of what to do & where to stay in Brooklyn.

EXPERIENCE: A relaxing river cruise

The first Riverboat Postman started the run in 1910, delivering mail and essentials to residents of nearby Dangar Island.

The tradition continues today, where you can join the Postman on his run and experience a relaxing river cruise, beautiful scenery and a hearty lunch onboard.

The friendly skippers are locals who have lived in the area their whole lives, and will tell you all the best stories of the river, 95% of which are true. 😂

The cruise departs daily every weekday (Monday to Friday) except Public Holidays from the Brooklyn Public Wharf (see the ferry icon on the map) at 10am, returning at about 1.15pm.

Bookings are essential.

Call 0400 600 111 or click here to book online.

EAT: Unforgettable Anzac Cookies & Super-Fresh Seafood

Let’s not forget the most important part of any weekend escape: FOOD.

Whilst exploring Brooklyn, a must-visit for lunch or dinner is Life Boat Seafoods.

Just a short walk frrom the Riverboat Postman ticket office, this venue offers a wide selection of fresh seafood, in a relaxed, casual atmosphere.

You didnt think we’d forget to explain the Anzacs, did you?

A highlight of taking the Riverboat Cruise is the unforgettable Anzac cookies served onboard.

Put best by the skippers themselves: “Our coffee is real, our tea is hot, and our famous ANZAC biscuits are home-made daily to Grandma’s recipe!”

(If youre lucky, you might even walk away with a copy of the recipe!) 😉

STAY: in a cozy cabin on Dangar Island

A cozy waterfront timber cabin on the beautiful Dangar Island, The Boat House is our pick for where to stay on your Brooklyn getaway!

Set on the beautiful Hawkesbury River, this is not just a ‘river view’. The boathouse is literally on the riverbank. Tastefully decorated with a cosy wood burning fire, your own bathroom. Bring whatever you need to eat and drink and settle in to get away from it all. We have cosy blankets, great books, games, wine glasses and everything you need for a romantic getaway or some family time.”

The Boathouse is boat-only access, and there are no shops or restaurants on the island, so make sure you bring everything you’ll need for the night.

If you’re on The Riverboat Postman,  get off at Milsons Point Wharf, ready for a cozy night in the cabin by the fire or on the beach under the stars!

A holiday home built in under a week!

Approximately 6 hours’ drive north of Sydney, in a cozy little corner of New South Wales, you’ll find a fascinating place called Hanging Rock.

This picturesque town is exactly where one Sydney family chose to build their Holiday Home. (in under a week!)

The Holiday Home was a traditional Cedar Loft Cabin.

After being factory-constructed in panels, the cabin was driven to site and construction began.

Cedarspan’s prefab construction method means that large trucks and cranes are not required, and the piered floor system means no concrete slab is required.

Once the panels arrive onsite, it only takes one week for the entire building to be assembled.

With Cedarspan’s Quick Installation, the Building was complete in under a week.

Pitched ceilings create the most beautiful atmosphere inside a home. 💕

You will notice there are no cross braces required inside,  making the room seem more spacious.

This special construction style is unique to Cedarspan, proving popular with Australians over the last 40+ years.

Inside, the walls are lined with EasyCraft wall lining - a quick and tidy alternative to traditional plasterboard.

By incorporating natural timbers, white walls and muted colours, the owners have turned this holiday home into a cozy, relaxing retreat.

Beautiful natural patterns of the wooden floor separate the kitchen area from the living area.

This flooring (available with all Cedarspan buildings) has been stained to protect against spills. A quick & easy DIY project.

The ownders have added corrugated steel siding to prevent animals and snakes from getting under the home. The piered floor that the home sits on means that no levelling or concrete slabs were required.

Exploring NSW: Things to see & do in Gerringong

The second exciting destination of our #explorensw series is the town of Gerringong.

Just 10 minutes from iconic Kiama on the south coast of NSW, Gerringong boasts gorgeous beaches, fine food and fun experiences to be had.

We first came across this little gem of a town when we stumbled upon the @soulofgerringong Instagram account which paints a gorgeous picture of cozy weekends away: soft crushed linen, long starry nights and hot chocolate by a crackling fire.

Read on for our roundup of The Best things to See & Do in this charming seaside town.

1. EAT // Piles of Pancakes, Local Sweets & Good Coffee

A key ingredient to a good time is good food and that’s exactly what you’ll find in Gerringong.

The Blue Swimmer Restaurant

First stop is the Blue Swimmer Restaurant. Open from 7am every morning, this charming European Bistro by the Sea is the perfect spot to drop by for a relaxing brunch with ocean views.

(Kitchen closes at 3pm most days, so we’d suggest you make this right after your sleep in and before the day’s activities).

More stunning pics from The Blue Swimmer here and here

 The Blue Goose Cafe

If a quick bite and a good coffee is what you’re after,  The Blue Goose cafe is a must-visit.

This pretty little location boasts mouthwatering cakes and slices, all made in-house, as well as towering burgers and pancake stacks. (Holiday appetite activated!)

There’s also plenty of gluten-free options available (and they look amazing too!)

2. EXPERIENCE // Hands-on Workshops at Buena Vista Farm

An ‘old farmhouse by the sea’, Buena Vista Farm will take you back to your roots with hands-on classes taught right on the farm.

If you’ve ever wanted to try your hand at sourdough baking, cheese making or fermenting, be sure to secure your spot before this popular activity sells out!

And for the coffee lovers, there’s a ‘Bean to Barista’ course which takes you through the whole process of harvesting, processing & roasting coffee beans. (You’ll also take home a small tree in a pot and a bag of roasted coffee. All snacks and a delicious farm lunch are included.)

For bookings visit buenavistafarm.com.au and definitely check out @buenavistafarm on Instagram to see Fiona’s inspiring updates from the farm.

3. EXPLORE // Saddleback Mountain & Werri Beach

Rising to about 600m above sea level, Saddleback Mountain is a photographers dream.

You can drive up to the lookout, or if you’re keen for some cardio, follow one of the bushwalking paths up the mountain.

The views at the top will be worth it!

Werri Beach

Another must-visit whilst in Gerringong is the family-friendly Werri Beach.
