Ellen’s Peaceful Holiday Cabin

This Cedarspan™ cottage is loved by its owners and those who pass by the property.

“We often have people stopping, coming in to look at it, asking if they can see inside the cottage.”

“They often say it looks tiny from the outside, but once you get in there, there’s so much more space when you get inside. They call it the Tardis from ‘Doctor Who.'”

But Ellen’s country lifestyle dream is far from science fiction. It was meticulously planned.

The prefab Cedarspan™ panels going up

“It took us a while to save and be able to build.”

“We were looking for an affordable option to have somewhere to stay when we visited our property.”

Ellen and her husband Mark set out to create a peaceful rural escape by adding a 30C40 to their property.

Installed to lock-up stage, ready for paint and fit-out

“We wanted our children to have somewhere safe and warm when we went down there.”

“It’s lovely. It’s very comfortable. It’s easy to keep warm or cool.”

Now that Ellen and Mark’s children are grown up, the couple has big plans for the cabin.

“This property was built for our retirement. We’re not in a position to retire just yet!”

“Things have kept us close to the city, like elderly parents and growing families.”

“I lost my mother this year, and my husband lost his father this year. So that has meant we can start to make plans for our retirement.”

Inside ‘The Tardis’: Ellen and Mark have created a rustic country cabin

Ellen loves her cabin so much; she’s contemplating an extension.

“We are thinking of putting another Cedarspan™ adjoining our current house.”

When Ellen is away from the holiday cabin, she always has peace of mind.

“It’s very well sealed. So these are important things when you’re not there all the time.”

30C40 with cedar upgrade and additional verandah and deck

But, when they are there, it’s always special.

“My favourite moment is every time I get down there.”

“We have wonderful views. It’s a beautiful spot. It’s lovely to have a homely cottage to go and sit on a verandah and do my knitting.”

As for Mark?

“He loves everything about it. He would go down there and be there tomorrow!”

2 Country Cabins to Inspire Your Airbnb Project

Now that Summer is upon us, holidaymakers are flocking to the regions, skipping traditional hotels, and opting for cosy homes.

Cedarspan™ customers Tony and Karen share how they turned their cabins into successful Airbnb stays.

Welcome to St Clement’s Cottage in Oberon.

This eye-catching cabin is a custom-made Cedarspan™ surrounded by English gardens on six acres of land.

The Cedarspan™ Verandah Design 3040, measures 7.2m x 5.6m

Karen, one of its owners, found inspiration for the colour while overseas.

“18 years ago, we were in France, and we saw a red house on a hill, and I thought we’ll go back and paint the house red, and my husband said ‘red’?”

When they had their Cedarspan™ cottage installed in 2011, they painted it to look like a natural extension of the house.

The Cedarspan™ cottage (left) looks like a natural extension of the main house (right)

Karen and her husband, David, chose the Verandah Design 3040, which includes a high pitch roof, elevated floor, verandah, and deck.

As optional extras, they added cedar windows and a cedar entrance door.

They wanted vertical timber for the exterior, so they chose board and batten cladding.

Winter Wonderland: the Cedarspan™ cottage looking picture perfect in the snow

“We thought it might look good to match the house, and everybody seems to say the same thing.”

Over the last decade, Karen says the Cedarspan™ has changed their lifestyle, giving them an appreciation for the simple things in life.

“It’s slowed us down to stop and smell the roses.

4 Cedarspan™ Loft Cabins shape Lake Oberon Estate

For two decades, this has been a family-owned working farm.

2018 signalled a new era for the 120 acres when Tony and Julie opened their gates to holidaymakers.

And it’s where four Cedarspan™ Loft Cabins shape a stunning country venue.

“They are all part of Lake Oberon Estate. It’s a venue for weddings and corporate events and group gatherings.”

“We also have it as an option for people to hire each cabin out for a weekend away from the city,” Tony said.

Cedarspan™ 40H70 with cedar upgrade and two additional verandahs

It was 2013 when Tony and Julie began bringing their vision to life. They chose 4 Cedarspan™ 40H70 loft cabins for their property.

The couple has since created an idyllic escape from the city.

Today, Lake Oberon Estate is a luxury five-star getaway.

“The majority of people who come here want to get away from Sydney, so they turn off their phones. They don’t want the wi-fi, and in some cases, they don’t even want the TV.”

And while Tony’s newfound lifestyle has been an adjustment, he couldn’t imagine living anywhere else.

“We still have our place in Sydney, and our kids live there. I only go there for necessity. I can’t handle the traffic anymore. When you’re up here and if you’ve got four cars in the heart of Oberon, that’s considered a traffic jam.”

Tony’s Horse Stables and Guest Accommodation

“We love it, and everyone comments on how great they look.”

Two Cedarspan™ structures stand side by side, adding both value and charm to this rural property.

“From our perspective, having them in there looks appealing, and part of the joy of having a horse property is being able to put beautiful buildings on there.”

Tony chose two Cedarspan™ 20H60 structures.

“We were always going to have the horse stables, and the second building has been turned into a studio.”

20H60 in board and batten with additional verandah

Tony says working with the Cedarspan™ design team was a flexible process, allowing him to make his horse stables fit for purpose.

“It was straightforward, pretty easy.”

“I gave them dimensions of openings for stable doors. We were then able to utilise our supply of stable doors.”

Tony added his own stable doors to the Cedarspan™ structure

Those who visit are impressed.

“When we bring clients onto the property, they can see that the stables are nice and the horses are very well looked after.”

“What mainly appealed to me was the design. I didn’t want to build the typical steel fabrication horse stable.”

Side by side: Two Cedarspan™ 20H60 barns add value and charm to this property

The second structure is used for accommodation.

The loft design gave us a lot of flexibility in how we were going to use the space.”

“We have a person renting that at the moment.”

“The plan is that my daughter might move in there down the track. We might use it for farm accommodation.”

The Cedarspan™ loft provides extra lifestyle space

Tony says, adding the Cedarspan™ structures to his property has been a wise investment.

“The stables are part of the commercial enterprise we run here, and the studio is paying for itself.”

For anyone considering adding a prefab structure to their property, Tony shares his advice.

“If you want something with a bit of character, these designs work well.”

“It’s easy to put up if people have a small acreage and want to build a secondary dwelling.”

3 Majestic Barns to Inspire Your Country Lifestyle

Living off the grid is a dream many Australians hold.

These days more and more people are making it their reality.

Cedarspan™ customers share how their classic barns shaped their country lifestyles.

It was a childhood memory that inspired Scott to build a barn.

30H40 with cedar upgrade, cedar French doors and windows, and barn-style double doors

“My father had a cedar shed when I was younger. I was looking to create something similar that suited the property.”

That’s when Scott came across Cedarspan™

“I was searching a few sites on the internet. It was convenient that we didn’t have to build from scratch.”

Making a move from Sydney, Scott and his family relocated to the Southern Highlands a few years ago.

These days, he and his wife are giving their teenage kids a taste of the simpler life focusing on family.

“I feel pleased to be able to offer that to them. It’s been a worthwhile move for us.”

Form meets function: A traditional barn and a multifunctional space

A mechanic by trade, Scott enjoys having a workshop on his rural property.

“I always love being in it, I guess. I love the ability to go somewhere and spend some time that isn’t so structured.”

Loft Barn 40H60 in board and batten with barn-style double doors

Mel has built not only a practical barn but also a beautiful space.

“We have people stopping in the street, looking at it and taking photos.”

White, traditional, and loved for its simplicity.

This Cedarspan™ barn is set on three acres of land.

It stands amongst a homestead and cottage, complementing its surroundings.

All-white inspiration, the Cedarspan™ barn complements the homestead at Belle Heath

Mel and Matt chose a custom-size Loft Barn in board and batten with barn-style double doors.

“We wanted a barn, and thankfully Cedarspan™ had the design we were after. They had the traditional style.”

“I think board and batten is making a comeback. The fact that it’s been around for a long time, it is quite on-trend.”

“The barn doors attract people. It’s a huge feature.”

And a photographer’s dream.

“Every week, I have a photoshoot.”

“Oz Design, Flower Power, Pet Barn, and Married at First Sight have filmed here.”

Away from the lights and cameras, the barn takes on practical use.

“My husband races cars. We needed something that could be multi-purpose, a larger three-car garage.”

Multi-purpose space, the barn also serves as a three-car garage

The barn has since provided Matt with a space to pursue his hobbies.

“It’s man heaven.”

“He adores that space. He loves it.”

Mel says she and her husband have embraced the rural lifestyle since fleeing the big smoke.

“The barn certainly goes a long way to give us that feeling.”

“It did start us off on a beautiful path of designing the rest of the three acres.”

This barn was Simon’s getaway for five years.

It was a place to enjoy camping, mountain biking, kayaking, and bushwalking.

To this day, Simon’s favourite memory from the cabin is the day it was installed.

The Cedarspan™ crew working through the night to complete the installation

“When the boys were putting the cabin up, I went up there. I missed them on the first day.”

“When the walls were put up, I just realised the size of it.”

“It was perhaps beyond my expectations, and it’s a solid piece of kit.”

Once installed to lock-up stage, Simon made it his own.

“I like the contrast the standout. The red door, for me it was a standout.”

“When you see it, it’s a beacon looking back through the bush.”

The classic cedar barn even endured one of Australia’s worst bushfire seasons.

This Majestic Cedar Barn is a Family’s Multipurpose Space

It was a childhood memory that inspired Scott to build a barn.

“My father had a cedar shed when I was younger. I was looking to create something similar that suited the property.”

That’s when Scott came across Cedarspan™

“I was searching a few sites on the internet. It was convenient that we didn’t have to build from scratch.”

Prefab Cedarspan™ Loft Barn 30H40 installed to lock-up stage

30H40 with cedar upgrade, cedar French doors and windows, and barn-style double doors

On an acre of land, a short distance from the home, this traditional barn provides a family with valuable space.

“It’s a workshop, music and storage area, and garden shed.”

How’s that for multipurpose?

Scott customised the design with loft balustrades and ladder

Making the move from Sydney, Scott and his family relocated to the Southern Highlands a few years ago.

These days, he and his wife are giving their teenage kids a taste of the simpler life with a focus on family.

“I feel pleased to be able to offer that to them. It’s been a worthwhile move for us.”

When asked what his favourite moment from the barn has been so far, the answer is simple.

“It’s the kids playing their instruments and our family standing around listening to them.”

Form meets function: A traditional barn and a multifunctional space

And while it’s a space the whole family enjoys, it’s become somewhat of a man cave.

“I get teased a little bit. It’s always claimed that I have all these things in the barn, yet I try and make sure everything is neat in the house.”

A mechanic by trade, Scott enjoys having a workshop on his rural property.

“I always love being in it, I guess. I love the ability to go somewhere and spend some time that isn’t so structured.”

“I don’t need to go in there with a plan, but I can come out with feeling like I’ve achieved something.”

For those who visit, the reaction is almost always the same.

“The common feedback is ‘oh, love that!’”

“They tend to enjoy what it looks like from the outside looking in. Sometimes, if people do end up coming in, it’s got the split level in there, and they see it as practical.”

As this traditional barn meets both form and function, its owner would happily do it all again.

“Ours has been fantastic.”

“I would be happy to use Cedarspan™ again should we buy another place and need to do that.”

Tony and Julie’s Stunning Getaway with 4 Luxury Cedarspan Cabins

For two decades, this has been a family-owned working farm.

It was 2013 when Tony and Julie began bringing their vision to life. They chose 4 Cedarspan™ 40H70 loft cabins for their property.

“I was going for the country look, and that’s why I ended up choosing Cedarspan™. I found Doug really helpful, so that was also another factor.”

Cedarspan™ 40H70 with cedar upgrade and two additional verandahs

Cedarspan™ structures are customisable. This feature allowed Tony the flexibility to choose a design that suited his needs and spending plan.

“I sat down with Doug and we worked through it together. I created my own custom design, working with Doug knowing what I could and couldn’t change. It made it fit my budget.”

Tony and Julie completed the internal fit-out, choosing a modern rustic look.

The stone feature wall and the fireplace is the focal point.

But it’s the Cedarspan™ high-pitched ceiling that creates the welcoming atmosphere.

“We added more insulation, so when you turn on that wood fire heater, the place heats up and stays warm.”

Before managing the popular Airbnb destination, Tony ran his own software company.

“I was supposed to retire five years ago, and it was something for me to do and for my wife to do. It’s become a big monster for us to handle on our own. It’s more of a retirement hobby.”

The tree change has also been a rewarding experience.

“What makes it for me is the people you meet. We’ve had some high-profile people like politicians.”

“We ended up finding this house outside of the bubble that we lived in forever, and we are happy that we moved up here.”

“We needed a single-story house because my husband had some big health issues, and he couldn’t manage the stairs very well.”

The barn has since provided Matt with a space to pursue his hobbies.

“It’s man heaven.”

A Warm and Cosy Home, a Daughter’s Gift to Her Mother

One in seven Australians is over 65.

And as our population ages, more and more families are caring for their parents.

“Having your independence and having community nearby is part of your humanity. It’s what builds our confidence and what makes you feel capable and needed.”

When Emma needed a comfortable and safe home for her 87-year-old mother, Elma, she chose a Cedarspan™ cottage.

“She had spent years with us taking care of her, and she felt ready to live a bit more independently again but wasn’t ready to stray too far away from us.”

Classic charm, the Cedarspan™ cottage looks right at home in the Southern Highlands

When the family moved from Victoria to the Southern Highlands, they bought an acre of land, intending to build a cottage close to the main house.

“We are in a weatherboard cottage; it’s about 100 years old. We wanted something that was a natural echo of that.”

Emma chose a 30C50 with cedar upgrade and an additional verandah along the length.

“All the people I dealt with, and any flexibility I wanted with it, there was always an openness for discussion. They were fantastic.”

“We added the stairs, and we put the verandah on the front in a way that we could then potentially add a ramp for mum if we do get to that stage.”

The customisable Cedarspan™ has given the family flexibility to add a ramp for improved access

The cottage has been renovated to suit Elma’s needs.

“She’s had a major stroke since then.”

“My brother did a lot of the fit-out for the kitchen and laundry to her specifications.”

“It’s an adjustable little design, and it amazes me how flexible it can continue to be.”

Emma’s brother completed the fit-out for the kitchen and laundry

Roof and wall insulation is a standard feature of all Cedarspan™ cabins.

“I put some good heating in as well, and because it’s so well insulated, it heats and cools so beautifully and easily for her.”

Emma has created a warm and comfortable home for her mother

Handcrafted and customisable, this classic Cedarspan™ cottage provided a straightforward and convenient process for the family.

“Cedarspan™ had a lot of options. The fact that you can change dimensions and measurements, those things worked well.”

“The price point was pretty fantastic for what you get in the end. It’s an enormous amount of work.”

“Very, very quickly up pops up this gorgeous little home.”

The foundation: Our Cedarspan™ Engineered GRID Pier Floor System results in extra stability

Quick assembly, saving you from lengthy, messy, and noisy construction

Once installed to lock-up stage, Emma chose to complement the character and charm of the Southern Highlands area and the main house.

Cedarspan™ 30C50 with cedar upgrade, measures 5.6m x 9m

“We wanted something fairly neutral, so we went with dark charcoal that would blend into the landscape a bit more.”

“We didn’t want to go into contemporary, new-age designs.”

“It looks quite natural and beautiful in the setting.”

Cedarspan Loft Cottage Becomes Tourism Icon

It’s one of the only places where the mail gets delivered by boat.

Welcome to Brooklyn, a small town, an hour away from Sydney.

Population 722.

It’s also home to a tourist attraction with a history.

Here stands a custom-made Cedarspan™ Loft Cottage known as The Riverboat Postman.

“I had exactly the idea of what I wanted it to look like, and it needed to become this icon of Brooklyn.”

Custom-made Cedarspan™ Loft Cottage, The Riverboat Postman, an icon of Brooklyn

One of its owners, Catherine Pignéguy, says, “it’s now become part of this little square of heritage-looking buildings, even though mine is brand new, but it looks like it’s been there forever.”

The first Riverboat Postman started its mail service in 1910, delivering post and essentials to the water access only settlements upriver from Brooklyn.

In 2012, the ferry postal run went into liquidation, so Catherine, her husband, and brother-in-law who run Hawkesbury Cruises found themselves delivering the mail.

“Australia post rang us and said, okay, now we’re in trouble because you guys are the only other charter boats in the greater Sydney area. Can you do it while we work out what we’re going to do next?”

And so began a long battle to give The Riverboat Postman a home on the Brooklyn Marina.

“All we needed to do was fight the Lands Department to get the shed that belonged to the post run, which was the dilapidated little thing that flooded knee-high at every high tide.”

The old shed, now the site of The Riverboat Postman

“When I went to Cedarspan™, I said, look, this is my problem. I have to submit a tender to The Lands Department with a plan of what I’m going to do, so I need a plan from you guys.”

“They were amazing. They designed the shed. They gave me all the plans for it which needed to be submitted to Lands.”

Meanwhile, Catherine set up shop in the marina carpark.

Catherine’s truck, The Riverboat Postman’s makeshift ticket office

“I ran my office at the back of a Pantech truck, selling tickets for the cruise.”

“I would have anywhere between 50 and 200 people coming, queuing up outside the truck. No power, everything had to be self-sufficient.”

Onboard for the ride as The Riverboat Postman delivers mail along the Hawkesbury

With patience came a big victory.

“I said to Cedarspan™; we’re done. We’re ready to go.”

“My absolute favourite memory is the fact that it took three years almost to the day of fighting with The Lands Department to allow me to do it.”

“After three years, it went up in 2 days.”

“It was phenomenal, absolutely amazing.”

An icon is born, The Cedarspan™ panels going up

Custom Cedarspan™ Loft Cottage, manufactured in a few weeks, assembled in two days

“The locals have embraced it now. They love the fact that it’s there, and they can use it as a directional point as well.”

“I would probably say without a doubt; it’s the most photographed Cedarspan™. It’s in everybody’s tourist pictures of Brooklyn.”

Custom-made Cedarspan™ Loft Cottage with Weathertex cladding

And now, it’s about to feature in an upcoming Destination NSW campaign as the State continues to revitalise tourism.

“We had to shut down for six months last year, so the mail was being run out of a tinnie.”

“All the deliveries coming through Australia Post had to be hauled up onto people’s wharves.”

“We were delivering these big boxes of toilet paper all over the river!”

The Riverboat Postman has become an icon of Brooklyn, NSW

While the path to running the Riverboat Postman was accidental, Catherine says it’s a time of her life she’ll never forget.

“To have left the next generations of this run with this cool little shed is even more special.”

“That’s my stamp on it.”

Cedarspan Barn Endures Black Summer Bushfires

145km from Sydney, on an isolated 100-acre property, stands a Cedarspan cabin.

Robust, resilient, and unscathed.

It endured one of the worst bushfire seasons in Australia’s history, known as Black Summer.

Simon, the barn’s previous owner, tells of its incredible survival.

“Waiting with bated breath,” he asked, ‘have I got a cabin still?’

It was standing there on its own.”

The aftermath: The Cedarspan barn stands strong after the devastating bushfires of January 2020

When the devastating Morton bushfire swept through the Southern Highlands, Simon was up North with family helping clear land for harvest.

“Watching the RFS fire website, watching where the fires were moving, I couldn’t leave, so it was a bit hopeless just watching this on the app on the phone.”

Realising how destructive the fires were, Simon called on his friends who drove from Wollongong to remove essentials and valuables from his cabin.

“Anything that was explosive or flammable, petrol, diesel, gas containers, lubricants, grease, we actually loaded up the bunker.”

Simon’s bunker was loaded up with flammables in preparation for the bushfires

On January 4, 2020, at 7:25 pm, the security camera on his property captured the moment the destruction erupted.

“The embers were starting to come through on the camera, and the motion of it was actually triggering the camera, and that went for about over an hour.”

Simon recounts the eerie feeling of watching the surveillance footage for the first time.

“It would have been 6 minutes when it did hit. It just burnt so hot and hard that it just went straight through in that time. It burnt everything in that instant.”

Pictures from a surveillance camera on Simon’s property

When Simon did return, he was amazed.

“Chest out shoulders back, telling the world have you got something better than that?”

In the aftermath, the area was patrolled by workers from Forestry, RFS, and National Parks.

“Some have come in on my bunker and scribbled onto the soot.

They scribbled ‘lucky’ onto the door of my bunker.”

But some weren’t so fortunate.

“There was a neighbour 600 metres to my east, and it was brick, older style brick, sandstone, and he lost that. It burnt to the ground.”

When asked what could have possibly saved a timber barn from a raging fire?

“By putting *CEDARSHIELD™ on, it seals it,” Simon explained.

“I had only just put two coats on the southern side, so the fire side two weeks before I went north.

You can rub your hand up and down the timber, no splinters whatsoever. It’s just more of that glazed feel on it, so you know you are also reducing the flammable property of the timber.”

“I suppose if I hadn’t put in a bunker, hadn’t cleared it, hadn’t put *CEDARSHIELD™ on, and hadn’t prepared, I perhaps would have been lucky, but I’ve done all those things.”

One year on from the bushfires, the area is beginning to thrive.

“The southern highlands is probably greener and brighter than it’s been before.

A lot of the big trees are still in shock, and they’re shooting out a limb.”

For five years, the barn was Simon’s getaway and a place for family and friends to enjoy camping, mountain biking, kayaking, and bushwalking.

To this day, Simon’s favourite memory from the cabin is the day it was installed.

“When the boys were putting the cabin up, I went up there I missed them on the first day.

When the walls were put up, I just realised the size of it.

It was perhaps beyond my expectations, and it’s a solid piece of kit.”

Day 2: The Cedarspan crew working through the night to complete installing ‘The Hills Barn’

Simon’s property borders both a national park and a forest, the only access for the Cedarspan crew was 50 minutes of 4-wheel driving through fire trails, with no mobile reception.

“I know how hard it is to get in and get out. They didn’t even comment on that. They just did it. Put the cabin up.”

The Cedarspan arrives, ready to be transported through tough terrain

Once installed to lock-up stage, Simon made it his own.

“I like the contrast the standout. The red door for me it was a standout. When you see it, it’s a beacon looking back through the bush.”

Now, Simon is in the process of looking at another Cedarspan barn for his new property.

“I’ve already been in touch and sounded out some ideas and enquired about product turnaround times which are way ahead of many other companies.”
